The film opens with the opening of glass doors and the appearance of a man's silhouette in the distance of the end of the corridor. It's a very dramatic opening to the extent of being melodramatic and sets up that element of the film. As the figure gets closer and closer the audience begins to anticipate what happens when the man reaches us and when he gets there we see a caricature-esque frown fixed on his face. He slams his police ID in our face and proceeds to introduce himself. This element of melodrama is a key player in the comedy genre, especially when playing up something familiar so that it become one giant in joke.
The first section of his introduction is fairly serious, successful police training and a list of accomplishments; the only signs of comedy here are the occasional element of extreme British culture.Throughout the entirety of this he maintains the comedic frown which when paired with situations such as a graduation photo becomes even more comedic.
That the silliness starts to be played up once he joins the police force is mocking in an affectionate way. His uber-serious commentary of him as he "established and effectiveness and popularity withing the local community" accompanied but a shot of him, frown in place, conversing with two elderly ladies is almost a parody of the average British policeman. This parody is continued with him giving a presentation to a school of hooded youths, driving James Bond style in a family hatchback and skidding with purpose on a bike. This parody of British culture is so well done that these elements that any British citizen could recognise become hilarious simply because of their British-ness alone. This ability to play on the familiar and turn it into comedy is often used in the genre and when gotten right can be the key to the success of a film.
The way the camera follows him around keeps a high energy and yet the fact that it rarely goes for an over the shoulder shot emphasises the documentary style nature of this intro. He is being introduce like a contestant in a reality TV show complete with self commentary and bright, cheesy music. All these elements play to the audience with the way they seem at odds with his serious expressions.
As the opening comes to a close it continues to increase in pace, as the shot cuts between certificates acknowledging his accomplishments in the field it builds to the comedic climax of him being stabbed in the hand by a man dressed as Father Christmas. that last but is said slowly, deliberately and timed with him knocking on a door which puts emphasis on exactly how ridiculous this is and shows a certain self awareness.
