As the opening titles flash on the screen it sets the tone, the track is silent and the words are in big, bold no nonsense writing. Orange on black making the words stand out. The screen changes to a landscape, it could be argued that this is orange and black too. In this establishing shot there is vast flatness ending in the distant form of a giant city, it's structures suddenly appearing out of nothing, there is sound here very simplistic yet practical, setting the tone.
A voice over starts, a deep almost inhuman sounding voice. It sounds authoritative and intimidating to the audience, so when it says "America is an irradiated wasteland" the audience believes it. On the matter of this being America the audience feels surprised, this is clearly set in a dystopian future, a staple of the sci-fi genre.
After a long while the shot switches to another of the ground and pans up towards the wall of the city, while the narration goes on talking about the city being cursed and so on. This slow pace is effective on the audience as it lulls them into the film, they relax and listen. The narrator tells us that this city "stretches from Boston to Washington DC" this is shocking and intimidating for the audience because of its sheer size, but it is also fascinating, how did it get this way?
After several drawn out shot changes we hear and see another sci-fi genre convention, a futuristic zooming noise and then a hover vehicle of some kind appears on screen circling round a massive tower block. All the colours in this city are muted and dull suggesting poverty and depression to the audience. Another switch and we're in a POV shot it is at a slight angle and from above as if we're flying, holograms are on screen again confirming the sci-fi genre that along with the stereotypical scanning noise as diegetic sound.
The scene changes, we see a muscular arm, clearly male, wrapping material around his hand. Another switch to dated looking footage of a riot then back to the faceless man we get a glimpse of his shoulder as her puts a leather jacket on. The music is picking up as the scenes are, the audience can tell this is leading to something and the lack of this man's identity makes it all the more curious. Fake news footage of rioting comes on screen, this is something the audience has seen before and that it could be connected to what had caused this future is scary for them. Another quick shot of the man shows him putting body armour on, this again raises the audiences curiosity since he must be doing something dangerous to need that. More riot scenes, but this time with the previous POV scanning.
Next we're shown a high angle shot of a massive building as the narrator says "only one thing stand in their way" this gives the building importance and perspective in the audiences eyes. We learn this is the hall of justice and see the man again, his face still hidden from view as he has his DNA scanned and puts a helmet on, ruling out the possibility of seeing his face altogether, as he describes the role of the people who work there we understand as an audience the the narrator and this man are the same person and that they work there, he names them Judges and the titles bursts onto the screen very suddenly, shocking the audience.
